Tales from Two Cities is a storytelling club for the Nottingham and Derby cities and wider area. We host traditional oral storytelling events – stories, music and songs too, drawn from the wonderful range of fairy tales, folk tales, myths and legends of the British Isles and the wider world. This is storytelling for adults (though older children and young adults are very welcome). We host events with both guest performers, local and national – even international – and open nights where local tellers and anyone wishing to take their first steps into storytelling can tell a story, try something new or develop and share their skills. We aim to provide an ambient, atmospheric experience where you can share a love of stories in all their forms, and meet new and old friends.
Our regular haunts are the Voicebox (a wonderful converted warehouse that is now a centre for voice and song on the outskirts of inner city Derby) and our new venue, the brilliant Five Leaves bookshop in Nottingham (just off the Market Square in Nottingham). Sometimes we venture further afield in search of cosy, interesting, sometimes historic venues – anywhere where listening to stories will be even more intriguing.
The group is currently hosted / mc’d by professional full-time storyteller Sophie Snell (see www.sophiesnell.co.uk) and Mel Bhavsar (whose tales are rapidly gaining her a reputation for beguiling charm), ably assisted by a whole host of local tellers all enthusiastic to widen the appeal and knowledge of traditional storytelling. We often appear at other storytelling events, festivals and arts venues, either in our own work as storytellers or as part of a group. If you have an enquiry or would just like to find out more about the club and our events, do please just get in touch.
The club has been newly formed (in July 2014) following the closure of the Storytellers of Nottingham, and also encompasses what was previously known as the Flying Donkeys of Derby. Contact details: Phone or email Sophie on Tel 01332 840007 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
We have a new email list you can join for monthly updates on upcoming events and storytelling related info – to join this please just email Sophie with the words “JOIN TALES MAILING LIST” in your subject line. You can unsubscribe any time again just by emailing Sophie
Occasionally we venture further afield, telling at local festivals and events, or hosting One-off Special Events and working within the Community on particular Projects. Do please contact us if you wish to make an enquiry.
Additionally Sophie Snell leads a series of workshops for aspiring beginner and improver tellers – “Only Words Aloud” and “More Words Aloud”.
Enquire direct to Sophie if you are interested in attending any of these workshops (email: email@example.com).
